My view to the world is blocked…

I’m starting my blog with a photo for a change; we have four cats and they feel the need to jump on the window ledge and stare, meow, and cause a general ruckus up there. Fighting for position, nursing (yes, they actually do that and it looks uncomfortable for all involved) grooming, and even, gasp, mating. For clarification, that only happened once because I ran out there and put the kibosh on that. I think it soured my milk…which in baking isn’t a bad thing. Last Friday was an especially trying day; they jumped up there early when they smelled the crockpot full of goodness and never left. They climb up the screen and rip/bend it with their claws so in the summer mosquitos and small flies get in our kitchen. The last straw is how they block my view outside-no one interferes with that! If they would just sit, like the cats we had growing up did, I would be ok with this, but instead, they feel the need to be a distraction. At lunch I mentioned this to my husband as part of our conversation and being the man he is, felt the need to remedy the situation. Herein lies the difference between men and women; I mentioned it and then feel better about it-that’s what women do. I wasn’t looking for a solution, just a sounding board. Not so with men; anytime I tell him something, he wants to fix it…and sometimes that’s not a good thing. This, however, was, and he grabbed a piece of paneling of sorts, tilted it at an angle, and put it in the window. They could jump up, but once they did, they would either have to try to perch like a bird or funnier still, claw at the screen before falling. All four had to try it and it was funny. Not going to lie. After that, I washed the window (which was full of their paw prints, nose residue, etc) and the view was perfect.
Kitty adventures aside, life is busy as usual. There was a vendor show in Harvey and I always enjoy going to that one; the people are so nice, it gives me a chance to catch up with friends I haven’t seen now that I’m not teaching, and it provides people an opportunity to buy home made, North Dakota based products. My hot seller was the raspberry-cantaloupe jam; I ran out of that before noon and wish I had brought more. That was my last show for the season; there is so much to do here with the construction and yes, Bison play off games every Saturday, that I don’t have time to bake and prepare for shows. I don’t think people realize how much work they are if you are a vendor who has to make the product fresh each time. Typically I will start three days early with the kuchen, freeze it, and then bake in progression-cookies/quick breads next, and yeast the day before. I made a really good peanut butter pumpkin bread and apple bran muffins; they were moist and had a nice dome at the top-not always easy with heavy bran. I use my homemade applesauce instead of oil in the recipes and that adds a nice flavor as well. I will be trading ‘Big Bertha’, my favorite stirring spoon, for a paint brush for the next month or so…
I made fudge for a customer yesterday and discovered a happy accident; she ordered both chocolate and peanut butter flavors and I only had one jar of fluff. I went to the computer to find how to make it home made and the recipes were too complicated for what I wanted. I am not going to waste three egg yolks and mess with the whites just for fudge. I have a ton of marshmallows since I buy them on sale and freeze them, so I measured out what I thought was seven ounces and it was 13 large ones; I think if you are using them for something like fudge where it melts, this is an ok alternative. The fudge turned out beautifully! New best friend!
After my alarm goes off at six, I lie in bed, thinking about what has to be done, wonder what my blog will be about, and am baffled by how today’s youth thinks Miley Cyrus is a good role model. She’s a maroon (to quote Bugs Bunny). Suddenly my eyes flew open and I realized I can’t remember which hotel I booked for the end of December.  I have booked and cancelled so many because of the playoffs and this one was a different one. Now I have to waste time today hunting down that information…
Take on Monday and let it know there is a holiday at the end of the week -you don’t want to work too hard…
